United colours of

Me..and my family..

With better lightning, make up and background it could be an adv from Benneton ( the pic on the left)
Somewhere in the late 80's..

Yesterday.. waiting for the bus there's this Surinam lady talking to me in Sranantongo
I had to dissapoint her and told her im not from Surinam.. Oh really?? was her response.
It's actually not the 1st time.. people think im from Surinam, they always guess wrong..
If they guess im from: Morocco, Egypt, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Curacao, India..
And they are so wrong! Not that its really easy to guess what my roots really are..
Not that i mind, i just find it funny thats sometimes the looks not always tell you what someone is..
To keep it easy im always saying half Dutch half Indonesian..
But if i go in details its more complicated..

Motherside: half Dutch and half Dutch east indian ( a mix of dutch german indonesian)

dadsside: Moluccan..most people think we're asian because we belong to indonesia.. But we're actually are part of the Melanesian people called Alifoeroes (cf West Papua) and have occupied the islands since at least 1000 B.C.
In the early 1600's, the Netherlands colonized the islands, beginning with the seizure of Ambon in 1605 and ultimately seized all of the area of what is presently known as Indonesia.

You understand its hard to explain when some people dont even know where Indonesia is..

If you think im a mix? Then you should see my family on my motherside..
I got cousins who are a mix of Dutch, Dutch East Indian and Chinese Indonesian..
And others are just dutch..
As kids and we walked alone with our white grandfather.. People came to him and praised him for the fact he adopted us.. on wich my grandfather always awnsered.. ' who said they are adopted they are my own flesh and blood"
You should seen the faces it was all written with hows that possible??
Well.. people with a small world we call that interracial relationships...
And we are just a product of it..

Im just curious what language they will speak to me next time on the busstop..
